Chron

    From Chronopedia

Chron is a duodecimal (base-12) system for measuring time intervals. Its fundamental unit, the chron, is directly equivalent to one Solarian human second. The advantage of a duodecimal time system lies in its greater divisibility by common factors, potentially simplifying calculations involving fractions of time. While the chron mirrors the second, it diverges when representing larger and smaller time units, adhering strictly to base-12 notation.

The current and formal definition in used by the Dozenal System of Units is more precise:

The chron [...] is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the caesium frequency, ΔνCs, the unperturbed ground-state hyperfine transition frequency of the caesium 133 atom, to be 1 946 716 076z when expressed in the unit Hz, which is equal to c−1.

    Chron Format

Chron expresses time using a variable number of numerical fields separated by colons. These fields represent units of seconds with prefixes based on the Systematic Dozenal Nomenclature (SDN). For values less than one chron, a decimal point is inserted between the chrons and milliseconds fields.

    • Untriquachron (uTqc): Intervals of 10¹⁵ chrons (one one penta-mo chrons).
    • Unnilquachron (uNqc): Intervals of 10¹² chrons (one quad-mo chrons).
    • Ennquachron (Eqc): Intervals of 10⁹ chrons (one tri-mo chrons).
    • Hexquachron (Hqc): Intervals of 10⁶ chrons (one bi-mo chrons).
    • Triquachron (Tqc): Intervals of 10³ chrons (one mo chrons).
    • Chrons (c): The base unit of time in the SDN.
    • Triciachron (tcc): Intervals of 10⁻³ of a chron (one emo chron chron).
    • Hexciachron (hcc): Intervals 10⁻⁶ of a chron (one one ebi-mo chron).
    • Ennciachron (ecc): Intervals 10⁻⁹ of a chron (one etri-mo chron).
    • (and so on)

    Example

    • ᘔ1:045:33Ɛ:109:73ᘔ.00Ɛ -
      • This translates to dek do one (ᘔ1) unnilquachrons, four do five (45) ennquachrons, three gro three do el (33Ɛ) hexquachrons, one gro nine (109) triquachrons, seven gro three do dek (73ᘔ) chrons, and el triciachrons.
      • In symbol shorthand - ᘔ1 uNqc, 45 Eqc, 33Ɛ Hqc, 109 Tqc ,73ᘔ c Ɛ tcc
      • When used to express a chronodate, colloquial names are preferred. In day to day use anything above revos is usually ignored except when discuss large time scales. This would be turn ᘔ1, arc 45, cycle 33Ɛ, spin 109, chron 73ᘔ, and tick Ɛ.

Chron Equivalents of Traditional Earth-Based Time Units

Below is a table of chron values to aid ancient Solarians in understanding what these values represent. The zero values added before units of chrons and after fractions of chrons are shown for clarity but are not a requirement.
